(Un)Common Objects
Project Statement

For this project, I was tasked with the experimentation of inked marks by taking randomly collected objects, dipping them in blank ink, and then creating marks on paper through techniques such as smearing, rolling, dropping, and smearing. I was then asked to pick a specific set of ink marks and create a list of representative words that emphasized the unique characteristics of the marks I created. Ultimately, we were challenged to manipulate and mold the image marks into a dynamic, abstract piece that retains the characteristics of the marks while also displaying the selected word.
Research

Not much pre-work was required for this project. I created a list of words that I collected through online thesauruses that I believe best encapsulated the charm of my image marks that could also lead to engaging illustrations.
Design Process

For my (Un)Common project, I was first instructed to choose different objects from a box at the front of the room, submerge them in black paint, and then using various techniques of application, make a variety of marks on a sheet of paper. I chose an Eeyore toy, an electric candlestick, and a sponge. Using these objects I created an abundance of marks and impressions to give myself a variety to choose from. I then collaborated with the rest of our classmates and asked which marks they thought were the strongest. My most successful mark was the smears I created from the electric candlestick. I was then asked to construct a list of words that emphasize the essence of the selected mark. I finally chose constrict as the word I wanted to move forward within the manipulation process. I then experimented and constructed multiple sketches intertwining the marks I created to construct the chosen word. After discussing with peers again I decided on my final design and began using scanning software and adobe photoshop to create my final composition.
Design Solution

The word I decided to go with was Constrict. Constrict fit my marks the best as the word allows for the utilization of bold thick curves, which perfectly describes my marks. My marks were tubular and bold, they were giving off a vascular vibe and also were swirled in a way where there was a gradient of ink. The aesthetic of my final composition felt very claustrophobic and entangling without being unreadable.
